It was discovered that the air intake vent was plugged, and the system needed to be adjusted and balanced to work at full capacity. This is why the products mentioned in this article are "not recommended for safety applications." Radon levels fluctuate according to certain conditions such as climate, humidity, ventilation, the time of year and, in some cases, the time of day. These estimates are based on the assumption that CO2 levels reach the base outdoor level every few days, so in the case of a slow and growing leak, it would never detect any change or any danger. Testing for radon levels to bring the level under control is not enough. Of course, it doesn't answer my first question at all, although it does say "Over many years, both the light source and the detector deteriorate" which, if this applies to the product in this article, means that the product will deteriorate "after many years." And to compensate for the deterioration, the owner has to either manually perform calibration (either in fresh air or in 100% nitrogen, neither of which are easy for wall mounted units), or the product has to make estimates as time goes on, which supports my concern in my second paragraph.
